Welcome to the 21st Issue
We would like to open this issue with a big welcome to Sweden’s new Ambassador to Israel, H.E. Elinor Hammarskjöld and Norway’s new Ambassador to Israel, H.E. Svein Sevje. We wish you both a rewarding and fruitful service in Israel and look forward to forging new and exciting ties between our countries and economies.

We would also like to congratulate the cities of Tallin and Turku. These Baltic beauties were selected as Europe’s twin Capitals of Culture for 2011. The festivities are well under way and we reveal what’s in store for residents and visitors throughout the year. While in Estonia, step out of Tallinn for a day or so to explore the first nature reserve in the Soviet Union and the manors surrounding it.

We also examine several industries in which Israel and the Scandinavian countries share common ground. The emerging field of regenerative medicine is one. No longer limited to research alone, we take a look into the labs to discover what advances are being made in some of the world’s prime hot spots for basic and clinical stem cell R&D. We also take a look at advances in green transport and logistics. Scandinavia leads the quest for zero-carbon travel and transport, while innovative Israeli technology may have discovered how to turn traffic into kilowatts. Two other articles in this issue focus on alternative energy. Smart grid policies and planning have already become a tradition in Denmark. Coupled with new smart grid technologies currently being field tested, they render Denmark a global leader in this field with significant know-how for export. In the area of clean building, in all of the Scandinavian countries and in Israel technologies have been developed that bring green living to life.

The food section focuses on microbreweries – a trend that is going global and creating opportunities for local brewers to take the world by storm. The security section reviews new developments in mini-UAVs, as they begin to make their way from military into civilian markets. We also check out some other homeland security innovations being developed in Israel.
And of course, there’s the opera. Not to be missed – a long weekend of Aida at the foot of Masada and Verdi’s Jerusalem under the Old City walls.
We trust you will enjoy the read.
